In Hindustani classical music, many ragas are believed to have originated from different sources, one of which is folk music. Ragas that evolve from folk traditions are known as Dhun Ugam Ragas. In addition to traditional folk-based ragas, the legendary Pt. Kumar Gandharva created eleven such ragas in the last century.  Dr. Sadhana Shiledar explored the creative process of developing Dhun Ugam Ragas. She collected authentic folk tunes directly from rural communities in India and, through her research and innovation, created three new ragas — Ritu, Anup, and Godhuli.
